The Golden Gate is a historic fishing Monterey Clipper built in 1928 in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf and is currently operated by Captain Sal Alioto. The Golden Gate has been in the Alioto family for three generations of fishermen and has been docked in the same berth since its construction.
Captain Sal is very proud of his Sicilian heritage. He was born and raised in San Francisco's North Beach and has kept the Golden Gate in ship shape all these years. Sal has passed his knowledge on to his son Nino to ensure the Golden Gate and its history continue through the next generation.
One would think that the Golden Gate fishing boat was named after the Golden Gate Bridge however, the Golden Gate Bridge was constructed in 1936!! After the construction of the boat in 1928! Legend has it that they named the bridge after this boat.
The boat's name, Golden Gate, came from the strait connecting San Francisco to the Marin headlands, which was named by Captain John Fremont in 1846.
At one time there were over 500 Monterey fishing boats in the Wharf of San Francisco but only a handful have survived.
The Golden Gate has a length of 28 feet and a beam (width) of 9.5 feet and is now powered by a 57-horsepower Yanmar engine. The original engine was a 12-horsepower Hicks engine. She can hold 6 tons of fish on deck and the style of the Monterey haul makes her extremely seaworthy.
When Captain Sal is not fishing he enjoys taking people out on tours and explaining the history of the San Francisco Bay.
